“I love you.” “I’m sorry.”
Those were the last heartbreaking WhatsApp texts Hersh Goldberg-Polin, 23, sent his parents from a bomb shelter near the Supernova festival before Hamas gunmen wounded him and dragged him into captivity. Eden Yerushalmi wrote: “They caught me.” Then: “Find me, OK?”
Both were murdered by their captors after 11 months in Hamas tunnels.
The National Library of Israel’s Bearing Witness project, working with Memorial 7/10, has collected 8,375 chats from Oct. 7 survivors and victims.
“People who wrote these messages didn’t think about them becoming a historical document,” said project director Maya Gan Tzvi.
The library is also sifting through more than 16 million files from hundreds of GoPro cameras worn by Hamas terrorists who were captured or killed.
And a gut-punch exhibit, Bound in Memory, showcases 250 books by families of the fallen — many of them children’s books for kids of slain soldiers.
The toll is real: reference chief Nachum Zitter got sick after the exhibit opened, and other staffers have needed psychological help.
