HAFTR’s tribute to Ally Rahmani

Foundation honors math teacher with a big heart

Some educators teach a subject. Others leave their students with a lasting feeling about themselves as learners. Ally Rahmani was one of those educators.

For the many students, families and colleagues who had the privilege of knowing her, Rahmani’s passing is an immeasurable loss. At the Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway, she was a talented and creative teacher, an inspiring educational leader and a beloved colleague and friend.

But to understand her impact, it is important to begin where Ally always began — with her students. As lower school math coordinator, Rahmani had a remarkable ability to bring mathematics to life. She made math exciting, accessible, and meaningful, while never losing sight of the child sitting in front of her. She challenged her students because she believed in them. She celebrated their successes as though they were her own. And she continually looked for new ways to help each child grow and become the best version of themselves.

Her students knew that she cared about their learning. More importantly, they knew that she cared about them. That distinction was at the heart of Ally’s teaching. She understood that a child’s experience in a classroom is about far more than mastering a skill or solving a problem. It is about developing confidence, learning to persevere, discovering curiosity, and beginning to see oneself as capable.

R

ahmani taught mathematics, but her students learned so much more.

Her creativity and intellect were evident in the way she approached her work. She was never satisfied with simply teaching a lesson; she wanted to understand how students learned, what would engage them, and how she could make an idea click for a child who had not yet found their way into it.

She brought energy and thoughtfulness to curriculum development, even writing her own, and to her role as a leader, always searching for ways to make learning stronger and more meaningful.

That same dedication extended beyond her classroom.

To her colleagues, Ally was so much more than a gifted educator. She was sharp, insightful, knowledgeable, thoughtful, and funny. She was someone whose ideas made conversations better, whose perspective made problems easier to understand, and whose personality made the halls and offices of HAFTR more vibrant. She was also the person who showed up.

Day after day, Ally was there for the people around her. She asked how you were doing and truly wanted to know the answer. She offered her thoughts, her help, her humor, and her friendship. She brought her opinions and ideas with confidence, but always with an enormous heart. For so many members of our faculty and staff, Ally was not simply a colleague. She was a friend.

T

hat is why her absence will be felt in so many different corners of HAFTR.

It will be felt by the students who no longer have her standing at the front of the classroom, encouraging them to try one more time. It will be felt by the teachers who will miss her insight, her laughter, and the conversations that could turn an ordinary day into something memorable. It will be felt in the hallways she filled with her energy and personality.

And yet, the most meaningful measure of an educator’s life is not what disappears when they are gone. It is what remains because they were here.

Ally’s legacy lives in the students she taught to approach challenges with confidence. It lives in the young mathematicians who discovered that they were capable of more than they thought. It lives in the educators she influenced, the ideas she shared, and the countless small moments in which she made someone feel seen, supported, or believed in.

F

or those of us who had the privilege of working alongside her, Ally will remain part of the story of HAFTR. For her students, she will remain part of the story of who they become.

We will remember her brilliance and creativity. We will remember her humor and honesty. We will remember her dedication to her students and her fierce belief in their potential.

Most of all, we will remember the enormous heart behind it all.

Ally Rahmani gave so much of herself to HAFTR. We are profoundly grateful that she was part of our community, and we will carry her memory and her example with us forever.

Upholding Ally’s legacy starts with our students.

Ally embodied chesed, and in her honor HAFTR Athletics will commit itself this year to raising funds for the newly founded Ally Rahmani Legacy Foundation. Established by Ally’s family, the foundation honors her memory by funding programs that inspire children, help them grow academically and socially, and build confidence in school and in life. Through this commitment, our athletes and coaches will help live out Ally’s values of teamwork, leadership, and giving.

Those interested in sustaining her legacy and continuing the work she championed are invited to contribute to the foundation. More information about the foundation and Ally’s life is available at allyrahmani.com.
