103 hurt in LIRR crash

Posted

The 7:18 am LIRR train out of Far Rockaway crashed through an end-of-the-line bumper at the Atlantic Terminal station on Wednesday, injuring 103 passengers.

Eleven people were transported by ambulances to Brooklyn hospitals, but none of the injuries were life threatening, according to the New York City fire department.

LIRR officials said the six-car train carried 430 passengers, many from the Five Towns. As a result of the impact, the lead wheel assembly derailed as did one additional axle.

“The  train was supposed to stop at a bumper and didn’t, but glad to report there were no deaths,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said at the scene. “The most serious injury was a broken leg.”

“We need to make sure we determine what happened, and why it happened, so the matter is still under investigation,” said MTA Chairman Thomas Prendegast.
