A personal trainer at a gym saw the posted flier offering CPR classes and called Malky Tropper, EMT and CPR instructor and asked to learn. The woman took the class and Tropper got a call from her eight months later. “I was in Williamsburg,” said the non-Jewish woman excitedly, “and I saw a Jewish boy with the long curls choking on a hard candy. He fell unconscious and I saved the boy by doing what you taught me! I beat the Jewish ambulance!” she exulted. more
Achiezer’s Krias Megilah Program is back for another year! Last year, volunteers in the Five Towns and Far Rockaway performed more than 45 lainings and enhanced the Purim celebration for many in our community. more
In a matter of moments there were literally dozens of accidents and emergencies. Cars slid into one another, mothers and children slipped and fell, and many elderly individuals suffered terrible falls and subsequent injuries. Just as quickly, our community sprang into action. more

A capacity crowd of high school and seminary girls and representatives of 13 community organizations filled Achiezer’s Central Avenue office in Lawrence to explore chesed as the raison d’être of every Jew. Rabbi Boruch Ber Bender, Achiezer’s founder, cited a chilling Gemara of a Tzaddik who climbed into his wagon to retrieve a piece of bread for a poor person, only to find that the hapless man had expired in the brief time that it took to find the bread. Rav Chaim Shmulevitz explains that it is not enough for a Jew to be happy to help another when asked — a Jew must always be prepared with a piece of bread in his back pocket, just in case! more

As the enrollment period for the Affordable Care Act gets underway, Achiezer has been fielding many questions. Dozens of families have already been successfully enrolled in the system, as Achiezer’s insurance staff were from the first in state to successfully train and learn these new programs; approximately 90 percent have already come away with significant savings. Yeshiva Shor Yoshuv in Lawrence, a hub of aid after Sandy to those devastated by the hurricane, filled with an overflow crowd of more than 2,000 men, women and children this past Sunday for a Tehillim (psalms) rally to thank G-d for surviving the storm. “The power of Tefila (prayer) from tinokos shel bais Raban (Torah-learning children) is very special,” explained Achiezer’s Eli Weiss, who organized the event. “The schools and shuls did a tremendous job of promoting and encouraging attendance and involvement and we owe them a great debt of gratitude for contributing to the success that B’H it was.” more
