Notwithstanding all the jokes about lawyers, there is no question that society would come to a grinding halt without legal counsel, and the role played by so many, in so many fields. From immigration to real estate, criminal cases to bankruptcy, lawyers act as intermediaries, guiding and often negotiating through difficult issues. It occurred to me recently that the very same principles that attorneys rely on in their everyday practice would likely make for a truly creative marriage guide.

Once the axle of his carriage cracked, once the boat upon which he traveled encountered terrible storms on the high seas and the captain refused to continue the voyage until the weather subsided. Eventually, he came to the realization that it was not destined for him to see the Holy Land. Nevertheless, he encouraged his disciples to make the trip, so they might be privileged to walk where Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebecca, and Jacob and Leah had walked.

The Jewish calendar, the luach, is among the most popular works of our faith. Within its covers can be found just about any and all laws that are time bound and time honored thus enabling us to effectively observe ritual and rite in the correct manner.
In a recent Dvar Torah (words of Torah) on Parashat Re’ei, Rabbi Berel Wein noted the historic importance of the luach with the following observations:
“The calendar has always been central to Jewish life and survival. Under the dark regime of Stalin, Soviet Jewry was forbidden from owning or possessing a Jewish calendar.
