To be honest, that year, I wasn’t particularly looking forward to Chanukah, and hadn’t really had much time to think about it. Our armored battalion had recently come down from a few months up in Lebanon and, while I was thankful we would be spending the winter in Israel and not up in the freezing cold mountains of Lebanon, we were still in the process of overhauling the tanks; not a particularly enjoyable task.

Article on Rabbi sparks memories
To the Editor:
Your article about Rabbi Chaim Aryeh Leib Schwartzblatt, a mashgiach at the JASA kosher kitchen in Far Rockaway, brought back memories [“From Holocaust’s ruins, a life of learning and teaching,” July 5].
The Rabbi Shulman, to whom he referred, who asked him to take on the position of mashgiach, was my late husband, Rabbi Nahum Shulman, a”h. For 20 years Rabbi Shulman was the Rabbi of Congregation Bais Tefila, the shul that served the JASA residents. In addition to serving as spiritual leader of the congregation, Rabbi Shulman was the Rav Hamachshir for the kosher kitchen, JASA’s large food program.
Rabbi Shulman’s appointment of Rabbi Schwartzblatt as mashgiach was an inspired decision. Rabbi Schwartzblatt has brought a unique personal history and Torah learning to his position.
My family and I wish him continued good health and fulfillment in all that he does.
— Mrs. Anita Shulman

It’s been four years since Alan Gross, an American subcontractor who was raised in New Hyde Park, was arrested and imprisoned in Cuba, and his life is in danger.
On Dec. 3, 2009, Gross was planning to return to the U.S. the next day and had just hung up the phone after speaking with his wife when Cuban officials entered his hotel room and arrested him. He was held in a Havana prison for 14 months without charge. After a summary trial in March 2011, a Cuban court stated that his work there was an attempt to undermine the Cuban government by distributing communications systems not under government control. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

The washbasin and its stand were made of copper from the mirrors of the dedicated women who congregated at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting” (Shmot 28:8).
There is much credit given to the women who donated their mirrors for the sake of the creation of the kiyor (washbasin). Who were these women? Why were they so special to the point of their being enumerated in such a fashion?

It was like a shot heard round the world. The leader of the Catholic Church was visiting Bethlehem Sunday to pray at the separation barrier built by Israel to prevent terrorists from killing Israelis. The purportedly impromptu event brought cheers from the Palestinians and propagandists who call the fence an apartheid wall.
