YU Yom Iyun on Rav’s twentieth Yahrtzeit

Known by many Jews the world over as the Rav, Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik will be remembered on the 20th anniversary of his death in a day long program of lectures, discussions and exhibits at Yeshiva University on April 14th.

Rabbi Yosef Dov Soloveitchik, as he is known in Hebrew, was a Torah luminary and the Rosh Yeshiva, head of school, at YU for almost half a century, ordaining almost 2,000 rabbis. His writings and erudition are still studied by many generations not only of his students but by grandchildren of his students and many others. His children and grandchildren have continued in his footsteps, educating new generations of Torah and Talmud scholars in other institutions besides YU as well, including at Yeshivat Har Etzion for men in Elon Shvut in Israel, and the Beit Midrash L’Nashim for women in Migdal Oz in Israel.

He “served as a mentor and role model for tens of thousands of Jews around the world,” noted Marvin Bienenfeld, a member of RIETS Board of Trustees and the chair of the event. “Through his landmark public lectures and writings he became, and remains, well-known for his unparalleled Talmudic scholarship and religious leadership. The Rav is also widely recognized as the architect of Torah Umadda, the synthesis of Torah scholarship with secular wisdom, which serves as the motto and guiding ideology of Yeshiva University.”

“Hundreds are scheduled to attend the event from all around the Tri-State area, including YU alumni of all ages, rabbis ordained at RIETS, and students of the Rav - those who actually sat in his classroom as well as those who bonded with the Rav through his writings,” said a YU spokesperson. “Even those who knew and developed relationships with the Rav will gain a great deal of perspective from the day’s presentations and sessions on this complex and brilliant figure. And, of course, all attendees will enjoy a truly unique Torah-rich experience that will be highlighted by thought-provoking discussions and lectures on contemporary issues.”

The full day learning program is open to all and will be held on YU’s Wilf Campus, 500 West 185th Street, New York, NY from 9 AM through 4 PM.
