Rosh Hashana burglaries hit 2 Woodmere homes

Two homes in Woodmere were burglarized over the Rosh Hashana holiday while their occupants were away.

According to police, a window was pried open in a home on Green Place and jewelry was taken. In a home on Fordham Lane, burglars gained entry through a rear door and stole jewelry and a computer, police said.

Public Information Officer James Imperiale recommended that residents take standard precautions when going away.

Homeowners should stop the mail and the newspaper deliveries and “notify a relative or neighbor if you are going to be away, to keep an eye on the house” he told The Jewish Star. He warned that residents should be sure that all doors and window are locked and should “set an alarm if you have one.” He also recommended using timers to turn the lights in the house on and off to “give the appearance of somebody being home.”

Burglars may survey Five Towns neighborhoods and realize that families may be away during Yom Kippur and the three-day Sukkot weekends. Precautions should be taken at any time when leaving home for an extended period of time, Imperiale said.
