Lido Beach - The Lido Beach Synagogue will show a documentary, “The Lonely Man of Faith: The Life and Legacy of Rabbi Joseph B. Cedarhurst - Chabad of the Five Towns will host a women’s class with Mrs. Chaya Franklin on August 4 at 8:30 p.m. There is no swimming, music, or meat. Mrs. Franklin will speak about the latent spirituality in Jerusalem and what we’re missing without Mashiach. The suggested donation is $10. Chabad is located at 74 Maple Avenue in Cedarhurst. Cedarhurst - The Red Shul will sponsor a forum on Tuesday, August 5 at 8:30 p.m., featuring Dr. Moshe Katz, who will share his experiences from the Holocaust, found in his book of memoirs, “Nine Out of Ten.” The evening will be sponsored by David and Penina Klein, with a light buffet to follow the presentation. All members of the community, both men and women, are invited. There will be no charge of admission. The shul is located on Oakland Avenue just off West Broadway, in Cedarhurst, next to the site of its new shul building, now under construction.
Lido Beach - AMIT will present a Yom Iyun Day of Learning Seminar for women by women at the Lido Beach Synagogue on Wednesday, August 6, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The seminar is titled “Jewish Women in the Arts” and the featured speaker is Dr. Amy Kratka, noted lecturer and educator. Her keynote address will be “Images of the Jewish Woman in Fiction.” Concurrent workshops will be presented by Eve Grubin –– “The Life of Eve in Poems and Classic Jewish Texts” and Lorenn Peer Ben-Gur –– “Women’s Voice in Jewish Music.” Lunch will follow. Plainview - The Plainview-Old Bethpage Library will host a knitting circle on August 5 and 19, and September 2 and 16, from 10:30 a.m. until noon. Learn to knit or crochet and enjoy pleasant conversation as you work. Bring worsted weight yarn and either #8 needle sizes or a size “J” crochet hook. Oceanside - The Friedberg JCC is offering several day trips during August. On Wednesday, August 6, there will be a trip to Showboat at the Gateway Playhouse with lunch at Collins and Maine, in addition to a lecture on the coach bus, for a fee of $104. On Wednesday, August 13, there will be a guided tour of the new galleries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, including Van Gogh, Monet, Matisse, Cezanne, Picasso, Renoir and more. Small groups of 15 per guide. Cost of $71 does not include lunch. On Wednesday, August 20, there will be a trip to Bally’s Casino in Atlantic City with casino cash givebacks, bagel breakfast, movies, raffles and more! Register early to reserve a spot, at a price of $50. On Thursday, August 28, take a trip to see “Over the River and Through the Woods” at the John Engeman Theater in Northport. Fee of $112 includes ticket, lecture on the coach bus about the show and an elegant lunch at La Casa Café in Northport. Mineola - Congregation Beth Shalom Chabad will host the last part of a three week course entitled “Heaven on Earth: A Virtual Tour of our Holy Temple” on Thursday, August 7 from 7:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. The class, given by Rabbi Anchelle Perl, costs $36, which includes a student textbook. Oceanside - The Friedberg JCC will host media personality and interior designer Natalie Weinstein on Thursday August 7, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., as she shares insider decorating tips on ways to create a million dollar look on a budget. Lawrence - Rabbi Natan Slifkin, the “Zoo Rabbi,” will be speaking in Congregation Beth Sholom on Shabbat Chazon, August 9. Lawrence - Congregation Beth Sholom will host a series of speakers on Tisha B’av, Sunday, August 10, beginning at 2:15 p.m. with Rabbi Moshe Teitelbaum speaking about “Jewish Journeys: On Rivers of Tears.” At 3:15 p.m., Rabbi Aryeh Zev Ginsberg will speak on “Understanding Jewish Tragedy: A Tisha B’Av Perspective. At 4:15 p.m., Rabbi Kalman Topp will speak on “The Menorah: From Temple to Titus.” At 5:15 p.m., Rabbi Ben Skydell will speak on “A Chassidic View of Diaspora.” At 6:15 p.m., Rabbi Kenneth Hain will speak on “Asking The Unaskable.” There will also be mincha minyanim at 1:35 p.m. and at 7:30 p.m., followed by maariv at 8:25.
