West Hempstead - A memorial service on Sunday morning, Dec. 21, at 10:00 at the Young Israel of West Hempstead, 630 Hempstead Ave will feature Nachman Holtzberg, father of slain Chabad Shliach, Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg, z"l. The memorial is co-sponsored by the Young Israel of West Hempstead, Chabad of West Hempstead, Congregation Anshei Shalom, Congregation Eitz Chayim of Dogwood Park, and the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County. Oceanside - The Friedberg JCC is holding tryouts for the 2009 JCC Maccabi games: There will be a coed tennis team, a coed swim team, and a boys basketball team. The teams will compete in Westchester from Aug. 16-21, 2009. Athletes must be 13-16 years of age and of Jewish heritage. Please call for tryout dates, which vary by sport. Merrick - Chabad invites the community to experience Chanukah on Dec. 21. Chanukah Wonderland, a project of the Chabad Center for Jewish Life, will be open from 1:30 – 4:00 p.m. At the "Clubhouse at the Merrick Park Golf Course," children and adults can experience Chanukah through hands-on activities (i.e. donut making) and creative arts & crafts at $6 per person or $18 per family. From 1:45 - 4:15 p.m., the Spectacular Chanukah Ride will be available for all those who sign up, leaving the Clubhouse at the Merrick Park Golf Course every 15 minutes. At 4 p.m., all are welcome to join the "Grand Menorah Car Parade." Travel in convoy from the Clubhouse at the Merrick Golf Course to Cammans Pond Park on Merrick Rd, to experience a grand 8-foot Menorah lighting, complete with live music, hot cocoa & latkes, and Chanukah treats. Oceanside - A new bereavement support group is being formed for widows and widowers, ages 50-60, at the Friedberg JCC, 15 Neil Court in Oceanside. The group is designed specifically for those who have lost a spouse in the last year. A brief interview with the social worker is required before the group meets to determine proper placement. Israel - Scholarship applications are now available for the 2009-2010 academic year for those planning to spend the year pursuing Jewish Studies in Israel. The Alisa Flatow Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by the family of the late Alisa Flatow who was killed in a terrorist attack in Kfar Darom, Israel on April 9, 1995.
