JCC of West Hempstead

The entire community is invited to attend our Yom HaShoah program which will be taking place on Sunday, April 7, 2013 at 11:00AM at the Jewish Community Center of West Hempstead, 711 Dogwood Avenue, West Hempstead.

Just over 65 years have passed since the end of World War II. Given the extended years of the Survivors of the Shoah (may each one live to be 120), it is very important for us to hear their direct testimony. It is a precious opportunity to listen to a Survivor’s eyewitness perspectives so we in turn can convey the reality of the Holocaust to future generations. Our guest speaker Elly Berkovits Gross is a renowned spokeswoman-Survivor.

When Elly was just 15 years old, she was deported, along with her mother, Irina and five year old brother, Adalbert, from a ghetto in Romania to the Auschwitz/Birkenau concentration camp. The day they arrived at Auschwitz was the last day she ever saw her family.

Many of these unique traditions are still celebrated and practiced today in Israel and the United States.

Help Lawrence High School

As many of you know, the entire south shore of Long Island was decimated by Hurricane Sandy. Lawrence High School is still closed because of it. While work on it continues, the school is eligible to have its auditorium completely rebuilt by Lowe’s. There are 30 schools nationwide in the running, and only the top five schools in voting will win the prize. Currently, Lawrence High School is in fifth place, but other schools are catching up. We can really use this. Please help out a community still struggling to get back on its feet by voting for Lawrence High School at http://www.makeamusical.org/smash-make-a-musical/meet-the-schools/ every day, from every device you own. It really takes only a few seconds. Also, feel free to let this email become viral. Send it out to as many people as possible and feel free to post the link on Facebook and other social media sites.

Thank you for helping out one of our neighbors....
