Jared Kushner defended his father-in-law, President-elect Donald Trump, against accusations of racism and anti-Semitism, telling Forbes that Trump’s history proves he was not racist or anti-Semitic.

“You can’t not be a racist for 69 years, then all of a sudden become a racist, right?” Kushner told the magazine. “You can’t not be an anti-Semite for 69 years and all of a sudden become an anti-Semite because you’re running.”

Kushner said time would show that Trump, 70, would not allow “hateful rhetoric or behavior” in his administration.

“I just know a lot of the things that people try to attack him with are just not true or overblown or exaggerations. I know his character. I know who he is, and I obviously would not have supported him if I thought otherwise. If the country gives him a chance, they’ll find he won’t tolerate hateful rhetoric or behavior,” Kushner said.

Kushner, the scion of a prominent Orthodox Jewish real estate family from is married to Trump’s daughter Ivanka.

The Forbes article also noted that among object displayed in the offices of Kushner Companies, of which Kushner is CEO, are a leather-bound copy of Pirkei Avot in the reception room and silver mezuzahs on office doors, and the boardroom features an oil painting of his Shoah survivor grandparents.
