Students from HANC High School attended an intimate town hall meeting at Hofstra University for Republican presidential candidate John Kasich on Monday. The Ohio governor was the first candidate to appear on Long Island in the run-up to the April 19 Democratic and Republican presidential primaries.

Accompanied by social studies teacher, Mrsa. Laura Eisner, and assistant college guidance director, Mrs. Marisa Gelb, the students received a first-hand look into the world of politics, just by heading across the street.

Kasich gave a short account of his early life, including a humorous anecdote about meeting President Nixon when he was just 18. He spoke briefly about Israel, calling it “one of America’s best friends,” and said to his opponents: “I’m dropping in, I’m not dropping out.” He praised the youth of America, and addressed his plans for the national debt and the rehabilitation of criminals and people who are mentally ill. Kasich refrained from personally attacking his opponents, and established a comfortable rapport with the audience.

Some of the HANC students were interviewed by Hofstra media and community, which asked for their political views and hopes in regard to the upcoming election. Students were sure to emphasize the importance of Israel in all the interviews.

Governor Kasich acknowledged the presence of HANC students and praised the Jewish religion more than once.

At the end of the event, some HANC students snapped a quick photo with the governor before he exited the building.
