Churchill and the Jews: The facts

6. In 1943, opposing Roosevelt, Churchill agrees to allow all Jews who reach neutral Spain to be given sanctuary in allied-controlled Gibraltar, saving hundreds of Jews who were being held in detention camps.

7. In 1944, Churchill’s own son Randolph parachutes behind enemy lines acting as the Jewish Agency contact aiming to seek out and rescue surviving Jewish communities in Hungary and Slovakia.

On Nov. 2, 2015, the Simon Wiesenthal Center posthumously honored Winston Churchill for his everlasting love and affection for the Jewish people. With his great-grandson present to accept this recognition, over 600 people watched with an awe that transcends generations and signaled gratitude to a family that bore much criticism, heartache and professional consequence for its steadfast support of our people and our national home.

Asked his views of the Jewish people, Churchill once responded, “We owe to the Jews … a system of ethics which, even if it were entirely separated from the supernatural, would be incomparably the most precious possession of mankind, worth in fact the fruits of all other wisdom and learning put together. On that system, and by that faith, there has been built out of the wreck of the Roman empire the whole of our existing civilization.”

I hope that Jeff Dunetz will take the time to better explore the record at hand beyond the above snapshot, and will join me in appreciating a true defender of the Jewish people.
