SKA students travel to Houston to help

Posted

When Hurricane Harvey left Houston devastated, students of the Stella K. Abraham High School for Girls reacted immediately with fundraising initiatives including a bake sale and a letter-writing campaign to teenagers in Jewish high schools offering words of comfort.

Twelve students and two faculty members traveled to Houston where to spent four days helping with hands-on relief. The woman in the photo, Margo, a traditional Jew active in her community, lost half of her furniture; after 20 years in her home, this was the first flood she had ever encountered and she was overwhelmed with the kindness she was shown.

Senior Joyce Mishan expressed the girls’ sentiments: “We really feel like we’re contributing and doing genuine chesed. Instead of just giving money to a cause, we’re on the ground and seeing and doing the work and the benefits of our chesed.”
