Shalhevet honors parents and staff

Midreshet Shalhevet will honor two sets of “parents of the year” — Dr. Jeffry and Mrs. Shira Beer, and Mickey and Malkie Hyman — and teacher of the year Jeff Ganeles, at its seventh annual scholarship Dinner, on Sunday, May 15, at Temple Hillel in North Woodmere.

The dinner “is the cornerstone of the school’s scholarship campaign, the success of which ensures Midreshet Shalhevet’s longstanding policy to provide the best Orthodox Jewish high school education, regardless of financial capabilities,” said Rosh Mesivta, Rabbi Zev Meir Friedman.

Shira and Jeffry Beer have been residents of the West Hempstead community for eight years, having moved there after ten years in Far Rockaway. They are the parents of Tamar and Michal (12th and 11th grade students), Yonatan (13), Sari (9) and Azi (4). Jeffry, a long-time talmid of Harav Yisroel Chait, shlita, is a physician in private practice at Long Island Spine Rehabilitation Medicine. Shira has been active in community and school activities for many years and currently serves as president of the Shalhevet Women’s League.

Mickey and Malkie Hyman have lived in Cedarhurst for 19 years, where they have been raising Rachel, Rivka (Shalhevet ‘14), and Gayil (Shalhevet ‘17 iy”h). They welcomed their son-in-law Shmuly to the family at the end of 2014. Mickey, president of Community Federal Savings Bank, is a past president of Kehillas Bais Yehuda Tzvi (The Red Shul) in Cedarhurst. Malkie, who has been involved with CAHAL for close to 20 years, teaches fifth grade CAHAL boys at Yeshiva Darchei Torah. Malkie has also served as Co-President of the Sisterhood of Kehillas Bais Yehuda Tzvi.

Jeffrey Ganeles, or "Mr. G" as he is fondly known, has been a part of the Midreshet Shalhevet family since 2009, teaching several different courses in mathematics (he had been teaching — and continues to teach — at Rambam Mesivta for many years prior to joining the Shalhevet staff. Jeff, A Far Rockaway native who resides in North Woodmere with his wife Rina and sons Rafi and Daniel, Mr. Ganeles is a graduate of the HALB elementary school and Rambam Mesivta high school who continued his Torah studies at Yeshivat Har Etzion (Gush), graduated from Queens College and became the first Rambam alumnus to return to the mesivta in a teaching capacity. In addition to sharing his knowledge and inspiring his students to not only excel but also to love math, Mr. Ganeles has always looked out for his students and ensures that they are succeeding in all areas of life.
