On Jerry naming babies and going to the birds

Posted

This past Shabbat, my husband Jerry and I were invited to our next door neighbors and good friends, Ely and Suzy Libin, for dessert. Their mechatanim, Claire and Stuie Hershkowitz, happen to be old-time dear friends of Jerry, and they were in from Israel to celebrate the birth of their new granddaughter.

You might remember Stuie, from an article I wrote few years back. Jerry, talked Stuie into going skiing, by explaining that Stuie, being an accomplished water-skier, would be able to ace skiing in a day, as the two sports are very similar. To make a long story short, they are nothing alike.

Somehow, they ended up on top of the black diamond (most difficult) slope, and before Jerry could explain anything to Stuie, he was gone. Jerry thought Stuie must have mastered the mountain, because he didn’t even see him on his way down. A little while later, he was summoned by a loudspeaker to the first aid station. There was Stuie, his head swaddled in bandages, complete with oozing blood. Jerry felt awful, but seeing that Stuie was resting comfortably and since it was such a beautiful day, he would take another run or two down the mountain.

For those of you who don’t know Jerry well (though, for heavens sake people, at this point, after reading about him all these years, you should know him by now!) he has no concept of time.

After, what seemed like hours (which it was) Jerry returned, got Stuie into the car and they were on their way back to Brooklyn. They stopped off at an emergency room in Brooklyn, as per instructions of the first aid team, and Stuie was re-evaluated and re-bandaged.

Once back in the car, Stuie noticed that Jerry was going the wrong way. Jerry explained that because he would arrive very late to his brother-in-law’s dental graduation party, he needed Stuie to up come along so he could use him for an excuse. I kid you not.

I’m not quite sure how, buy after that escapade Stuie and Jerry remained close friends.
