'Names Not Numbers' joins HAFTR, Lawrence students

Posted

HAFTR Middle School students were joined by 30 students from the Lawrence Middle School on Monday to hear about the Names Not Numbers Project.

The project was conceived by Tova Fish Rosenberg, renowned Jewish educator.

Students who participate learn about tolerance, acceptance of diversity, and the celebration of multiculturalism.

HAFTR Middle School Principal Dr. Rochelle Brand opened the program with three lessons — Be strong in your faith and values, actively do good deeds, and fight evil.

Brand reminded the students that “evil occurs when good men do nothing” and so it is incumbent on each person to learn from the past to create a better future.

Dr. Gary Schall, Lawrence District Superintendent, told the assembly that this may be one of the most important educational opportunities students can have. Lawrence Middle School Principal Willis Perry discussed the impact that this partnership will have on participants as they become leaders of the next generation.

The 2015-16  Names Not Numbers Holocaust Memorial Documentary is scheduled to be shown to the public next June 2, culminating a school year of research, oral history, written biographies, and filming and editing, all done by the students.
