Nassau County Legislator Fran Becker is poised to overtake incumbent Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy in the race for the 4th congressional district seat, according to a new poll.

Interviewers for McLaughlin & Associates conducted telephone surveys of 300 likely voters in the 4th C.D. in June and again in October. Participants were asked if they were likely to vote for Becker or McCarthy. If the voter was undecided then two more questions were asked: which candidate the voter was leaning towards and if there was a negative opinion towards McCarthy.

During that time, Becker’s support increased from 25 to 45 percent while McCarthy’s only moved from 45 percent to 46 percent. Moreover, voters with a favorable opinion of McCarthy decreased by eight points and her unfavorable ratings increased by three percentage points.

“Although Fran Becker and Carolyn McCarthy are statistically tied on the ballot for U.S. Congress, the momentum in the race is with Fran Becker,” the poll concluded.

The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 5.6 percent.
