Sounds of joy literally fill the air at South Nasau

Chances are very good that you’ve heard Brahm’s Lullaby, the famous cradle song. Every time a child is born, that beloved melody is being played over the public address system at South Nassau Communities Hospital’s Center for New Beginnings.

It not only adds joy to the new mother and father’s event, but also spreads that good feeling to family, friends, staff and other patients.

“Every action we take here at South Nassau is designed to inspire a spirit of hope, optimism, encouragement and wellness for our patients, their family members and friends as well as our staff,” said Sue Penque, chief nursing officer. “While this simple touch complements the expert care we provide for mothers and their babies, it also invites all patients and staff members to join in the celebration of the birth of the baby.”

“The first time a patient hears it they usually ask why that song is playing,” said Director of Nursing Gayle Somersteinom. “From then on when they play the lullaby you see a smile on the patients’ faces, knowing another baby was born.

“Even in meetings, when the song comes on, you see employees stop for a moment to let that absorb.” Named to the Becker’s Hospital Review list of “100 Hospitals with Great Women’s Health Programs” in the United States, last year South Nassau delivered 1,958 babies.

The entire South Nassau center was designed with parents in mind, from the labor and delivery suites, to the 24-hour visitation policy.
