Yeshiva University’s milestone 25th Annual Red Sarachek Invitational Basketball Tournament finished with a bang on Monday as the Davis Renov Stahler Yeshiva High School Wildcats of Woodmere beat the Shalhevet High School Firehawks of Los Angeles, to win the tournament’s championship game 47 to 32. The win capped a perfect season for DRS.

More than 20 yeshiva high school teams from across North America took part in the annual tournament, named for the legendary Bernard “Red” Sarachek, YU’s former longtime men’s basketball coach, from March 10–14.

Israel’s Ambassador of Goodwill, Jewish Hall of Fame athlete Tal Brody, paid tribute to Coach Sarachek and spoke to students and fans during the tournament. Sarachek also included a lively Shabbaton and tours of the university’s Manhattan campus to provide young all-stars with an inside look at YU’s unique educational environment and culture.

“Where else but at Yeshiva University can Jewish teens from communities throughout North America enjoy each other’s company and play serious basketball in a strong Jewish environment?” said Rabbi Kenneth Brander, vice president for university and community life at YU.

Other participating schools this year included, from the New York area, Rambam Mesivta of Lawrence, The Frisch School, Torah Academy of Bergen County, and Yeshiva University High School for Boys/Marsha Stern Talmudical Academy. Participants from elsewhere in North America included the Atlanta Jewish Academy, Cooper Yeshiva HS of Memphis, Fuchs Mizrachi School of Cleveland, Hebrew Academy of Montreal, Ida Crown Jewish Academy of Chicago, Kohelet Yeshiva High School of Philadelphia, Maimonides School of Brookline, Rabbi Alexander S. Gross Hebrew Academy of Miami, Robert M. Beren Academy of Houston, Southern California Yeshiva High School of San Diego, Valley Torah High School of Valley Village, CA, Yeshiva High School of Boca Raton, and Yeshiva University High School of Los Angeles.
