Three local yeshiva day school students are semi-finalists in the prestigious Siemens math, science and technology competition.

Two HAFTR High School seniors, Rachel Sacks (left) and Gila Schein,(pictured with Rabbi Gedaliah Oppen and Naomi Lippman) were named Siemens semifinalists. The nation’s premier competition in math, science and technology for high school students, Siemens honors the best and brightest students. This summer, Rachel and Gila participated in the Research Scholar Program at the Garcia Center for Polymers and Engineered Interfaces at Stony Brook University.

At HALB’s DRS High School, senior Tzvi Heimowitz was named a Siemens semifinalist. Tzvi is the only male yeshiva student to be named a regional in this year’s competition. He performed his research over the summer at Stony Brook University’s Garcia Research Center where he researched hydrogen fuel cells. Sixty-nine students in Long Island’s public and private schools, and 498 students nationwide, received this elite recognition.
