2002  — The Jewish Star’s Kosher Kibitzer presents “a risotto that raises questions” and asks, in relation to Sen. Joe Lieberman, “Can a Jew be the next President of the United States?”

2003 — Area residents show support for Yad Sarah and meet with Jerusalem’s mayor.

2005 — The Young Israel of West Hempstead turns 50.

2006 — “Spending Shabbat in Kiryat Sefer … is a real experience for a Woodmere girl,” writes Tamar Hanau. “Shabbat really feels like Shabbat there. No one works on Friday and you can feel the anticipation.”

2007 — Eighth graders of Yeshiva Ketana of Long Island visited the school’s future home, which is nearly half done.

2008 — At JFK’s International Synagogue, the chief rabbi of Tel Aviv, Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau, lights the menorah on the first night of Chanukah. Also on page 1: “Mumbai victim’s father at West Hempstead memorial” and “Eliezer Project makes project; Organization expands to meet community needs.”

2009 — It’s almost like winning the lottery: a tuition-free four years at Yeshiva University. 19 students from Five Towns area high schools have won that privilege, YU reports.

2010 — “Snow problem? No problem.” The Jewish Star reports: “With their flight delayed, 500 stranded El Al passengers in JFK airport are eating well thanks to the generosity of community members in Far Rockaway and the Five Towns.”

2011 — The Groggers bring a punk beat to the Orthodox music scene.

2012 — Neil Cohen suggests the Sandy Hook shootings’ lessons for yeshivas, and The Jewish Star reports that local schools had been beefing up their security even before the tragedy in Connecticut.

2013 — The Nassau Herald newspaper selects the founders of i-Shine as its “people of the year.”
