Posted

— The Jewish Star reports: “It is opening day at Brach’s supermarket in Lawrence — at long last! Five years in the planning and construction, it took close to nine million dollars to get from point A to opening day.”

— Agudath Israel in Bayswater was mapping its comeback, after a pre-dawn arson fire destroyed much of the building’s interior.

— Rabbi Avi Shafran writes about anti-Jewish messages directed at Palestinian children through television cartoons. In one cartoon, Israelis are portrayed committing unspeakable atrocities, after which a child says, “I must take revenge upon these bloodthirsty aggressors who murdered my father, mother and brother.”

— The standoff between the Vaad Hakashrus and Gourmet Glatt’s former owners continues. Business at the Cedarhurst store is “reduced to a relative trickle since virtually every commnity rabbi advised his mispalelim to take their trade  elsewhere, for the sake of preserving the Vaad as the sole kashruth provider in the Five Towns.”

— “Close call for 5T eruv: Poles, wires torn down on Rockaway Turnpike.” The Star’s Mayer Fertig reports: “The ongoing working on Rockaway Turnpike in Lawrence has lengthened the commute for thousands and turned daily errands into a real chore, but last week the construction project almost messed up Shabbos, too.”

— Complaints over a racy billboard on Rockaway Turnpike promoting a “gentleman’s club” appear to be going nowhere. The sign is legal, authorities say, and unlikely to be removed.

— With the dedication of 14 Torah scrolls, the North Shore Hebrew Academy in Great Neck celebrated what The Jewish Star called “an event of biblical proportions.”

— Two skateboarding teens formed a swastika with discarded metal chairs they found in the parking lot of the North Shore Sephardic Synagogue. “You know when kids do reallyi stupid things?” asked a detective. “This is one of them.”

— Page 1: “ZOA dinner celebrates hawkist stance.” The keynoter, Floria Rep. Ileanna Ros-Lehtinen, said “UNESCO made an anti-Israel message, and we also have a message for them — not with our money.”

— Malcolm Hoenlein drew 200 to Congregation Beth Sholom in Lawrence to demonstrate support for Israel on the eve of a ceasefire in the latest Gaza conflict.

— “Even Dems slam bad Iran deal” is the headline for Jeff Dunetz’s “Politics on the Go” column.
