During the 16-day government shutdown, the press was full of reports of the battle going on within the Republican Party. Those reports may be understated. The centrist and the liberal Republicans want revenge. Even as the Obamacare website, and the broken promise of being able to keep ones healthcare, is threatening to give the GOP everything they lost in the shutdown and more, even though it was the tea party activists who gave the GOP its house majority, the “establishment” money men of the Republican Party are preparing to attack conservative lawmakers “from sea to shining sea.” more
The American media seems shocked — shocked! — by Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s speech calling for the Palestinians to recognize Israel as the JEWISH State, giving it headline status. more
Tiberius is one of my favorite cities in Israel. It was the home of many great rabbis who lived or were buried there. The Sanhedrin fled from Jerusalem during the Great Jewish Revolt against the Roman Empire, and after several moves eventually settled in Tiberias. Many scholars believe that the Mishna and the Jerusalem Talmud were compiled by Rabbi Judah haNasi in Tiberias. It also happens to be the location of Pagoda, my favorite Chinese restaurant in all of Israel. A sad part of Tiberias history occurred 75 years ago. On Oct. 2, 1938, an organized group of Arab attackers massacred 21 Jews. Three of the victims were women and ten were kids younger than 12. They were stabbed, shot and burned. more
To the Editor: Speaking on behalf of the progressive Democrats who read your paper, I was annoyed to see yet another piece by Jeff Dunetz using Judaism as a justification for a partisan political position [“A Rosh Hashana message to our President,” Sept. 6]. more
Looking back on the 21st century, historians may view the second week of September 2013 as the beginning of the end of the United States as a super power; or at the very least as the week Barack Obama was outmaneuvered by Vladimir Putin and the Russian President became the leader of the Western World. more
The question of possible American action in Syria is dividing the country, and reasonable people on all sides of the political spectrum can be found supporting or opposing any action. more
Sometime before we light the first candles of Rosh Hashanah, President Obama will send his holiday message to the Jewish community. The President usually misses a big part of what the High Holidays are about — understandable since he isn’t Jewish and he was a student of the law rather than of theology. This year, I decided to send the President a Rosh Hashanah message of my own, a message that explains to him why progressive politics is antithetical to the meaning of the Jewish Holidays. more
High Holiday services have much ritual and tradition, with almost every shul having its own traditions (adjustments in nusach, prayers, and even how aliyot to the Torah are handed out). One tradition in every shul with which I have had the joy of spending the holidays is the rabbi’s sermon. The sermons are the prime time events of the holiday season. more
During his negotiations to restart talks, Secretary of State Kerry reiterated President Obama’s position that Israel should begin negotiations by agreeing to return to the pre-1967 borders (they didn’t). Afterwards they criticized Israel’s move to build additional homes in existing communities. Put aside for a moment that Judea/Samaria is the only place in the world where the President of the United States believes people of a certain religion (Jews) are not allowed to live. What the President and the Secretary of State won’t admit to is, there is no such thing as pre-1967 borders. That imaginary “green line” running through the West Bank is the 1949 Armistice Line. But even the armistice lines were never meant to be a “border.” more
On the last night of the cruise to Alaska my wife and I enjoyed last week, we stayed in and watched the movie Spiderman that was playing on my cabin TV. Watching the movie, it occurred to me that Spiderman’s boss, Daily Bugle publisher J. Jonah Jameson, is a perfect example of what I always imagined a manager to be when I was growing up: a gruff, cigar chomping, get the job done without caring whose feelings were hurt, type of guy. more
