This week’s Nefesh B’Nefesh flight, the group’s 49th such transport, carried NBN’s 35,000th oleh (immigrant) to Israel. The passengers, who came from thouoghout the United States and Canada — including West Hempstead, Great Neck, Queens and Brooklyn — personify the ideal of kibbutz galuyot (the ingathering of the exiles), moving to Israel to pursue their dreams of living in the Promised Land. more
After the much anticipated year in yeshiva or midrasha has come and gone, the students return to earth from a spiritual high in the rarified environment of Torah learning in Israel. Back in the U.S., many struggle to establish a college experience that continues their Torah high. To facilitate and maintain a yeshiva connection in the students, Rabbi Yisroel Kaminetsky, menahel (principal) of the Davis Renov Stahler (DRS) High School for Boys in Woodmere, has initiated a periodic Shabbat minyan (the next one is this Shabbat, Dec. 7). All single post-high school young men and women are invited. more
From the one time in Re’eh to the three times in Shoftim to the five times in Ki Tetze, the Torah tells us nine times to eradicate evil – “Uvi’arta hara” – from either amongst you, or amongst all of Israel. It would seem that in most of these cases, as well as others in our parsha, the Torah is advocating for a death penalty kind of punishment for those who are either guilty of a crime, or are in violation of a mitzvah. more
